frequently asked questions

What is a typical class like?

Of the many classes we offer (mainly barre and yoga!) we consider all of them to start the moment you walk in. Your experience should feel kind, genuine, and welcoming while also adhering to our mutually beneficial core values and code of ethics. Before class begins, every student sets up their mat. There are mat maps next to where the music sources are which can help guide us all to setup properly and with enough space to move freely. Please stagger if need be and always a make room for your neighbor. We effort to begin with asking how you are. How are you? Where is your mind? How does your heart feel? What is your body telling you? After we engage as a community, our teachers typically introduce themselves and give a brief description that reminds everyone of what class type they are about to take and what they can expect. Most teachers will also remind you of their personal qualities and what they are feeling too for truly dymanic exchange. We'll then anonymously ask if you want assists that day as we do like to give them when granted permission. Then, we tune-in and set an intention for our workout. When class starts, the lights are turned up and there is an energetic warm-up. While most yoga classes traditionally start slow, we start right in at the middle of a bell-shaped curve to really ignite and inspire the room. Expect to be guided through poses that may increase in pace and difficulty while also seeing and hearing consistent demonstrations that you can modify at any time. We looove to modify at SHAKTIBARRE! Every human being, no matter their body type, level of fitness, or emotional state, should feel like the moves are compelling yet achievable. That being said, please encourage yourself to be an advocate for what you need in the moment as it comes to you, too. Though we have signature sequences, our teachers are highly adaptable and are very eager to help. About midway through any of our classes, you will likely be feeling super challenged and a handful of fun and connecting activities can be used to share the challenge such as breathing aloud, making other noises, freestyle dancing, partner moves, and/or myriad meditations in motion. As class comes to about the 75% point, the lights will dim and you'll notice a marked difference in the tone and feel of the room. This is when we usually explore balancing exercises and core work, then it picks back up for a few more intense songs. To close, we always do a seated meditation after Savasana. Feel free to bring your journal, and even your own crystals, oils, or any other sacred object with which to honor your practice. We are very thankful to have you in class, and to know you as you continue to know yourself. Post-class, it is integral to the success of all subsequent classes that props are put away very neatly, we all transition into the Community Space without too much noise or delay, and that if you're feeling up to it we check in with one another before leaving as a lot can come up in an intentional fitness class and we are here to hear it! P.S. Your classes at SHAKTIBARRE extend beyond the studio! Tag us with @shaktibarre on Instagram, chat with us in the Community Space, and always seek to ask questions before assuming. See you on the mat, at the barre, and beyond!

Do I need a mat?

Yes, a yoga mat is required for all classes and we advise bringing yours. Should you also want to store your own mat, be sure to subscribe to all newsletters where you will be update in the bi-annual mat clearings. We also have rentals are just $2 but with all the sweat your own mat will always retain the best grip! After using any mat, please thoroughly wipe it down with the wipes we provide.

Is there a dress code?

LOL no way in heck there is a dress code here...we only ask that you leave your shoes VERY NEATLY in the shelves by the front door. P.S. we once read in some really odd marketing campaign that covering your belly will "get you faster results" — while it's true dressing comfortably can allow you to move flexibly and keep you in a confident mindset, there's no statistical proof that hidden navels and kneecaps make you isometrically superior. Basically, free the nipple.

If you had a purchase the expired March 10 or later, please also follow our usual policies below with the exception that no emergency documentation is needed because the pandemic we are all of aware of is sufficient. PRICING POLICIES There are no refunds, and we only offer pricing extensions if you've missed at least 2 weeks of classes and with proof of a doctor's or emergency note so definitely familiarize yourself with the timeframes of each purchase (as explicitly stated in the names of the services themselves on Mindbody and/or in the prices below). We love to hear from you! At the same time, if your request is about bending our policies we sincerely apologize but we cannot cater to those. Each of our healthy boundaries have been tried, tested, and trusted to maintain a safe, affordable, and vibrant experience for all. For liability reasons, under no circumstance can packages be shared with persons other than the singular name to which the purchase is tied. Late cancels / no shows are an unattended offering that you didn't personally remove yourself from before 12 hours, thus resulting in both the loss of that class and a $5 fee.

What is your late policy?

We will honor up to 5 minutes of lateness which means you must be in the classroom itself at the 5 minute mark. Being anywhere else in the studio does not count as being on time. Thank you! Read here for a blog we wrote about how to be on time more often.

Where are you located?

Currently we are located online only (LIVESTREAM SCHEDULE) and we hope to reopen safely someday in Williamsburg as well.

How do I access the Lost + Found?

We are so sorry to hear you may have left something at the studio! While you are 100% responsible for your items, we rarely face a situation where something goes entirely missing (this has only happend once when two people swapped the same-ish coat and a few other times when we had a well-announced mat clearing that your newsletters will detail and mats were left behind) and are looking forward to helping you. Please note the Lost + Found is cleared out every 7 days and we cannot hold anything for you. Your safest bet is to return to the studio ASAP and ask the front desk to look in the Lost and Found for your item.

How can I buy a Gift Card?

Thank you so much for thinking of whoever needs a SHAKTIBARRE gift card!!! Here are the steps you need to take and some things to note: (1) If your person has an account already with any of our studios, simply make your own account and buy what you want for them. Then, email empower@shaktibarre.com with the following details so we can transfer the purchase over to the individual you're gifting it to: Your first name, last name, + email Their first name, last name, email, + what you bought them (2) If your person does not have an account already with any of our studios, simply make them an account using their first name, last name, and email. Then, purchase what you wish to gift to them using your own payment information but don't save the card! Please also note we do not generate physical or digital gift cards. Once you are all set with a purchase for your friend/family/neighbor/love, we encourage you to write them a nice, hand-written card letting them know of the exciting SHAKTIBARRE adventure they have to look forward to. Extra special points if you include when their purchase expires (purchase expirations are right in the name of the purchase itself)!

code of ethics

All staff and students at SHAKTIBARRE must act with integrity, diligence, kindness and respect in their professional relationship with peers and fellow team members. They must also practice measurable inclusivity not only in their communication but in their interpersonal conduct inside and outside of the classroom. While one aspect entails giving space and time where necessary, the most reliable path to maintaining strong and clear bonds is to communicate directly, with curiosity, and with urgency. we actively welcome and support people of all backgrounds and identities. These groups include but are not limited to members of any race, ethnicity, gender identity and/or expression, culture, national origin, social or economic status, immigration status, age, body-size, and physical or mental ability. every single person engaging with shaktibarre in any way must understand that harassment and exclusionary behavior will not be tolerated and can result in disciplinary action. the shaktibarre team upholds these conscious practices as an exemplar for students to act and communicate in a similar manner that reflects the studio’s core values and ethical non-negotiables.
